High Tech Mercenary, redux

Keywords: #employment #advice

The days and weeks move on. I’ve sort of had less to post here lately, and less interest in keeping this up to date unfortunately!

In recent news, I’m actually going to be back on the job market. I am not certain how soon I’ll brush up the old resume, and where I might shove it out at. The $dayJob kept me gainfully employed for about fifteen years. The owners/managers/bosses at $dayJob and I parted ways amicably.

I’ve been pursuing my private pilot certificate as well the last year or so, and have a date for my check ride, May 24th. I wasn’t even really slightly thinking about a career transition until the $dayJob and I parted ways. However with that news, combined with a long-ongoing general tech burnout that kind of predates that fifteen year stretch even, is making me think about life and career directions.

Commercial Pilot (technically ATPL) is unfortunately not a serious option. Why? Well at my stage I’m something like two(+) years of paying to fly and go to classes. And I have a family to support, so, not really an option.

I’ve also kind-of always wanted to work as a train Engineer or Conductor. That path looks more realistic (maybe?) as it is on-the-job training. The pay is obviously FAR less than I made as a High Tech Mercenary. BNSF has one nearby primary recall location, and another that’s not terribly far.

Or I could stay in IT, I’d still make FAR less than the most recent $dayJob but I’d probably make more than I’d ever make at BNSF, and likely more than I’d make for a long time as a Pilot.

I’ve been “done” since March 7th. And everyone keeps asking me what my plans are, and I really don’t know. The railroad intrigues me, it’d be union, with retirement, benefits, etc. I’ve never been part of a union shop, I’ve only rarely had a retirement plan (And I’m getting OLDER so thats suddenly important), and I’ve rarely had benefits.

So, dear readers, what do you think?
